Lightweight Wheelchairs - These wheelchairs are very common today and are quickly becoming the
new standard in use today. Lightweight wheelchairs normally have frames made from aluminum
instead of steel, and most of these wheelchairs have the ability to fold up. Today's wheelchairs can
be purchased in most any color, although black is still quite common. The armrests, footrests, wheel
sizes and other wheelchair accessories can be added to fit your specific needs. The size of  the rear
wheels normally depend on whether or not your wheelchair is a self-propelled wheelchair or an
attendant-propelled model.

Manual or Self-propelled Wheelchairs - These types of wheelchairs usually have large rear wheels
and are propelled by the person occupying the wheelchair. The most commonly ordered rear wheel
sizes are 22 inches or 24 inches in diameter, but normally the rear wheels for these wheelchairs
range from 20-26 inches in diameter. The rear tires have circular hand rims that the user pushes in
order to move the wheelchair forward or backwards. These lightweight wheelchairs are popular and
make it easier for the occupant to propel the chair. Skilled users of these wheelchairs can easily
control the speed and direction with very little effort. If you are using a manual wheelchair you may
want to consider buying a pair of wheelchair gloves to protect your hands.

Lightweight Transport Chairs - These types of lightweight wheelchairs are often called transport or
transfer chairs, and they are propelled by an attendant or companion who pushes the wheelchair.
The person pushing the chair uses the handles in the back. Normally, transfer chairs come with
hand brakes and seat belts for added safety. These wheelchairs are commonly used at airports,
and there are even special transfer chairs designed to fit down narrow airplane aisles. These
models have small front and back wheels and cannot be propelled by the occupant of the chair. They
are great for taking a loved one out shopping or for wheeling them around at a park or mall. Most of
these chairs are very lightweight and are able to fold up and easily fit in the trunk of your car.
